Thor Herseth

The Kabetogama Historical Society joins the community in celebrating the life of long time resident and Society board member Thor Herseth (1926-2011).
In 1928 Thor moved with his family to Kabetogama, where they founded Herseth’s Vacation Camp, now known as Herseth’s Tomahawk Resort.
Thor joined the United States Navy at age 17 during World War II and was a Gunners Mate 3rd Class on an LST. After serving in the Navy, he went to Spring Grove, Minn., to finish high school. While there, he met his future wife Helen Lee, and was married in 1949.
Thor and Helen moved back to Kabetogama and began running the resort, which they operated for over 40 years.

Thor and Helen raised three children at the lake.
Thor enjoyed running the resort and meeting all his guests. He loved Kabetogama, the surrounding area and all his good friends and neighbors. In the winter he drove school bus to Orr until he retired. Thor was an outdoorsman, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and trapping. He also had many hobbies: flying planes, snowmobiling, welding, chainsaw carving, well witching, and tinkering in the garage on everything. Thor always enjoyed visiting with friends and spending time with his family. (excerpted from International Falls Daily Journal website) |
